The rationales and routes to llama and alpaca ownership are many. Some owners acquire their animals expressly for their fiber and already know the skills to make use of their fiber. More commonly, llama and alpaca devotees desire to learn about spinning after falling in love with the animals, but not necessarily as sources of high-quality fiber.

Now those owners who fit into the latter category have a 50-page primer, self-published by Chris Switzer, who decidedly fits into the former, having received her fine arts degree in weaving in 1984 from Colorado State University, and having 37 years experience in weaving. Chris keeps 5 looms busy creating scarves, shawls and wall pieces.
